Devlog:Display, Layouts, Widgets

September 23, 2026

After working through various compass rose designs, I looped back to the CSS grid that I was using to lay out what I was calling Layouts and Docks, and found the terminology a bit off. Eventually I arrived at these:

  • Display controls the window size
  • Layout controls the CSS grid and contains regions
  • Regions contain widgets, which are discrete bits of UI

My CSS grid layout was theoretically flexible, but I hadn't yet done very much with it. I'd always wanted to offer an option to make a game that looked like a Legend Entertainment game, but I hadn't thought much beyond that. After finally doing a deep dive, I came up with about 20 different layout styles that authors can use with a simple one line setting, and I'm pretty pleased with them. Options include lots of different row and column arrangements, including presets that simulate not only Legend, but Level 9, MacVenture, Magnetic Scrolls, and granddaddy Scott Adams (technically the same as Level 9).
